A Beginner’s Guide to Making Money on Fiverr

Making Money on Fiverr

Making money on Fiverr is an excellent option for anyone interested in using their skill set to create a freelancing career. In fact, the website itself results in a new gig every five seconds and over 25 million projects have been completed! Whether you have been freelancing for a long time or are just beginning, getting started on Fiverr will allow you to expand your business, earn more income, and ultimately allow you to choose the projects you want to work on.

Believe it or not I do have various skills that I have developed over time (Gardening, and Making Delicious Eggs). More seriously though, I am fairly decent at website development and have become somewhat of an expert in keyword research as noted above. For more reading on the best keyword research tools feel free to check out my article. Because of these skills I wanted to ensure that I could take projects and earn additional income. Why not use the skills you have? I have been involved with Fiverr for quite some time and it has been extremely beneficial to me. Although I do not make a ton on this website, I do make enough to pay for some serious expenses! If you want to make a little or even a lot, get on Fiverr.

Making Money on Fiverr

What is Fiverr?

I won’t spend a long time on this because many of you have heard of the website. However, Fiverr is a website in which individuals buy and sell services. The whole idea around the website started around the concept of $5 for a service. Initially it was meant to be micro gig projects. Think about it, there are a lot of projects I would pay someone for at a rate of $5! The website has since grown and although it maintains the five dollar per project persona, it has increased its own ability to raise prices. This is good for you because you can truly focus on making money on Fiverr with additional ways of increasing prices.

What Can You Sell on Fiverr?

The options are almost endless. Even the website itself mentions that as long as it’s legal and complies with their terms of service you can sell it. Fortunately, the website does have over 100 categories of service. In my experience the most popular categories are some sort of graphic design work, marketing, and writing. However, there are legal services offered on the website as well as business plan proposal assistance and video work. Regardless, it appears the options are only limited by our own creativity.

Fiverr Categories

For example an individual on the site right now is offering to create video cooking recipes. Another person might offer to proofread resumes. Finally, somebody might offer to research articles. The options are endless in many ways.

Master Tip: Focus on what you can accomplish but add twists to those skills. For example, if you can make innovative videos perhaps add voice overs or something that makes you standout. In many categories buyers are looking for innovation. Often the more innovative, the more money you can consistently earn.

How Much Does it Cost to Put a Job on Fiverr?

The thing I really like about the website is that although you do not make the full $5 per sale, you do not have to pay anything to list a job. In other words, if you listed job and nobody seeks out your services then you don’t lose any money at all! However, the website does take 20% of the earnings. Not a bad deal but still an excellent opportunity to list something without having the risks of nobody biting.

In my experience the 20% has not been an issue. For example, based off of $5 you would get to keep $4 but as you grow your business on the website you can offer additional services at additional prices. This is where I have begun to recoup some of the 20% costs. I also have a separate website where individuals can find me for freelancing work outside of Fiverr.

How Much Can I Post Jobs For?

Much like I discussed before most jobs are priced at $5 per job. However, the platform does give you the opportunity to offer different packages. Many individuals offer incentive packages to get jobs done quicker. For example, you could offer a logo design for $5 and get it to customer within five days for $5. Or, you could offer the same logo for $10 and deliver it to the client in three days. Generally, the platform allows you have the flexibility to create packages that are meaningful to both your projects as well as your customer.  See below for what that looks like!

Fiverr Project Levels

Depending on your level though might be able to offer different prices for jobs beyond the initial five dollars. As a beginner though you will want to focus on building your reputation as an excellent freelancer. This means focusing on building a client base, having awesome customer service, and above all making sure that your products are of the highest quality. Increasing your levels as a seller allows you to offer additional packages for additional prices. Without going too in-depth, here is Fiverr’s description of what you need to do to get to the next level.

How Do I Market Services I am Offering?

The first step in marketing your services is making sure that your profile is completely filled out. The platform gives you the ability to include various skills that you have as well as a description about yourself. Further, you also get the opportunity to list out your education. Your entire profile is extremely important as it gives any customer a view into who you are, what skills you have, and whether you are trustworthy or not.

Once you have fully filled out your profile you should make sure that you connect any social media profiles and then move on to building your job posts. Building your job posts or gigs, is extremely important because this is where you will be able to market your services. This includes marketing your services from a competitive standpoint as well as a keyword standpoint.

Understanding the Competition

From a competitive standpoint I suggest that you look at competing gigs on the platform. This is invaluable because it allows you to do actual market research of what services are popular, how those services are marketed, and the actual profile of the services and individuals involved. Once you have gotten an inventory of those competing services you will have a better understanding of how you need to build your own job and service profiles. This includes using specific keywords, phrases, and building an over all persona of professionalism on the platform.

Understanding the Keywords

From the keywords standpoint you should make sure that you are using keywords that individuals actually search for. One of the best exercises that I do is I start to search for the services that I am going to offer. I normally find other keywords that I might be missing and I write those down so that I can include it when I am building my job profile. Feel free to be quirky with your description but always remember that you are building a persona of trustworthiness and professionalism and above all a profile for someone that is going to get the job done!

Finally, I always suggest that if you are going to get into the freelancing world start building out your overall persona and branding. This does not mean that you need to dive right in but it is certainly helpful to create a blog, social media profiles, and to start spreading the word about the services that you can offer. For example, one of my good friends started building out various jobs related to graphic design. He used Fiverr as well as other websites and ultimately worked towards building their own social media profiles and website for services. Fast-forward six months and my colleague is almost to the point of where he is freelancing on a full-time basis.

Do You Have Any Other Relevant Tips for Making Money on Fiverr?

Making money on Fiverr is important but if you are going to dive into the freelance world you need to be thinking long-term. Think about whether freelancing is something that you want to do on a full-time basis or whether you think it’s going to be a side gig. Different skills allow themselves to have different opportunities but you should think about this from the onset and start planning. Remember, following your passion and creating the life you want to live needs to be the priority. Focus on what makes you happy and what can allow you to be successful with customers and will undoubtedly succeed. Cheers!
