An 8 Page Website Can Pay Your Mortgage

I recently began experimenting with micro niche websites again. A micro niche website is a website that is limited and laser focused in content that very rarely expands more than 10 to 20 pages. Historically, micro niche websites were the most popular mechanism to passive income.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s you could find two, three, or four page websites solely focused on one individual product. The interesting part is that these were actually were profitable. Fast forward 10 years and these websites started to lose their popularity because of the rush towards authority websites. I am no stranger to either and believe that both can be profitable endeavors. An authority website will provide you with significantly more income but it also comes with significantly more responsibility. A micro niche website although less profitable does require less ongoing maintenance.

As I started to brainstorm new projects I found myself more interested in developing a micro niche website that would allow me to create a profitable venture but one with less responsibilities. Truly Passive Income. Further, I decided that if the website could generate $10,000 annually then it would be a venture worth pursuing. Honestly though, $10,000 annually was more of a goal, financially speaking. The real goal in this experiment was to see if an eight page website could generate this level of income and only need to be updated a few times a year. Which ultimately leads me to today’s article which is building an eight page website that can provide consistent passive income.

Rules of My 8 Page Website

I started by creating ground rules for this experiment. The first rule that I made was that the website cannot be more than eight pages. This excludes privacy policy, contact, and other necessary pages. However, the eight pages are limited to the revenue generating pages. Second, the micro niche website was not going to focus on a specific product. Why? Undoubtedly focusing on product creates more upside but it would also violate rule three. Rule three is that I can only update the website on a quarterly basis. Rule four is that there are no limitations to social media and my link building campaign. In other words, I used Hootsuite to space out all of my social media updates and to test any sort of link building and social media strategy.

I almost forgot! You are probably wondering why no product specific websites? By utilizing products you would almost have to update more than quarterly. Certainly you could update on a quarterly basis and survive but if you look at most product based websites any sort of reviews are often updated on a monthly basis (See Below). Further, I would actually violate this rule because I would need to maintain an understanding of new products even if I wasn’t updating on a quarterly basis.

I am not saying it could not work. I am also not saying you could not create a micro niche website focused on certain products. However, for this goal I wanted to focus on a minimalist but high-quality approach to non-product based websites. Plus, product based websites are significantly more competitive.

Now that I created the rules for the endeavor I needed to focus on the research. The first question you’re probably wondering as how is this guy going to create a micro niche website without focusing on any product? Simple! I chose to focus on experiences.

Now this isn’t going to be one of those tutorials where I am immediately revealing my specific niche. I have had my problems with that in the past and it never turns out well. However, I am more than happy to walk you through how to figure out a proper niche when it comes to experiences. Further, experience based micro niche website actually provide you with an upper hand when it comes to passive revenue generation.

Analyzing the “Experience” Niche

Nowadays, experience over products has become big! They matter more than things, products, and shopping to the millennial generation and it is predicted that experiences will continue to be a focus.  I do suggest that you start thinking about experiences more broadly and then focus on experiences that are growing in popularity but also one that is financially solvent.

Step One: Analyzing Any Trending Experiences

Trending experiences can be anything from mountain climbing to beer making to travel. Really focus on analyze popular experiences or popular topics. Let’s use the example of visiting specific areas that have certain experiences. For example, let’s walk through analyzing white water rafting. Now I want to be clear in explaining that you are not going to create a website solely focused on white water rafting but you are merely using the activity of white water rafting to move forward.

At the onset you should simply type into your Google search bar “white water rafting at” and see what pops up.

Next, type in “best white water rafting” to see what comes up.

Finally, type in “white water rafting rivers” for more results.

Clearly you can type in a few different words and continue to try out this exercise but the idea is really to put you in a position of where you are getting a general list of items that individuals are actually searching for in the niche of white water rafting. Once you have that list you are gonna take all of those searches and input those searches into the Google keyword tool. This is going to provide you with a significant number of results but all results that focus on the general idea of visiting locations for the purpose of white water rafting. Here is an example below:

Step Two: Expanding Your Micro-Niche

Next, comb through all of the results and find any specific commonalities or locations. The reason this is an important step is because it is going to help you take a step backwards when analyzing what your micro niche website should focus on. In other words, you are merely understanding experiences right now and not picking a niche.

Now if you notice above there are some references to North Carolina white water rafting. This is an example of finding the commonalities within your search for experiences. Based off of seeing the North Carolina relevant search terms, I created a short list of what I believed would be additional relevant search terms. You can see these below.

Knowing that there are various experiences within this location, I needed to do a deeper dive into specific areas. What I found was that most of these experiences were occurring in one area of the state. Western Carolina. From there I went back to the Google keyword tool to see what additional terms were coming up not only for Western Carolina but also Western North Carolina. I did go through this a few times because I wanted to be as expansive as possible.

Step Three: Narrowing Down Your Category

Using our examples from above, it is absolutely necessary that your micro niche is narrowly tailored to a specific topic or idea that allows you to focus not only on experiences, such as white water rafting, but also experiences that might require products or places that might have multiple experiences. For example, in my research outlined above I found out that Western North Carolina has multiple different types of experience. These include not only white water rafting but fly fishing, hiking, mountain climbing, and other outdoor activities. This creates a great basis for a micro niche website focused on experiences. Let’s use Western North Carolina as our focus area.

What does this mean? This means that your 8 page website will focus on the lowest hanging fruit and highest quality content that is specifically focused on Western North Carolina!

Although this is only an example I do believe that this is an excellent category. Nevertheless the concept could focus on wine trails, beer trails, mountain climbing destinations, or other general category experiences. In this case, I have merely found an area or region that offers many different experiences. This concept can certainly transition to many other areas. For example, above I use the idea of wine trails. You could easily focus a micro niche website on wine trails in specific locations or even an informational website on preparing to visit wine destinations. For mountain climbing you could also focus on similar types of topics. The point is that given the transition to focusing on experiences, micro niche websites have the ability to be laser focused but provide high-quality information as it relates to a general category.

Step Four: Brainstorming Your 8 Articles

Remember when I mentioned an eight page website? This is something that I truly meant and something that can easily be created given the research we have done so far. Just brainstorming off of the top of my head, as it relates to various experiences in Western North Carolina you could easily create webpages and in-depth articles.  Here is part of the list:

  • Top 10 hiking trails in Western North Carolina
  • Top 10 waterfalls in Western North Carolina
  • Top 10 outdoor restaurants with views in Western North Carolina
  • Top 10 fishing spots in Western North Carolina
  • Top 10 canoeing spots in Western North Carolina
  • Top 10 key slopes in Western North Carolina

Step Five: Bringing it All Together

For the articles mentioned above it is absolutely necessary to do additional research on keywords and to evaluate the competition. Your goal should be to isolate low hanging fruit as it relates to the topics. Generate high quality content that is unmatched in that category. This ultimately allows you to create a website solely focused on these eight pages. However, the continued focus then needs to be on updating and revenue generation.

For each article I simply took a month in each quarter and schedule out an update. I would do additional research, add additional items, and in many cases would update even the graphics within the article. In addition, I would make sure that in the title of my article in parentheses, so that the search giants could see, that it was updated in (July 2016). This ultimately allowed me to take substantive and in-depth articles, spin quick updates into those articles, and ultimately create a micro niche website solely focusing on these experiences.

As for revenue, the options are endless. In my current micro niche website experiment I am utilizing both Google AdSense as well as Amazon. Remember when I mentioned above that it would be nice to find an experience website that requires discussion of products? I did just that. In the Western North Carolina example you can see how products would be easily intertwined with those articles. For example, if you’re discussing hiking then you can easily put on their products from Amazon related to hiking or if you are discussing fishing you can easily put on products that are related to fishing. In addition, Google AdSense would be a good revenue generator simply because the organizations offering these experiences typically advertise through Google.

In the end the key is making sure you are not only developing high-quality content but you are also working to spread the good news on social media. Therefore, I always suggest implementing some sort of social media campaign to get the information out there. This could be you posting on your own, creating a Facebook page, or trying to get the word out on Twitter. The point is that even with an eight page website you need to be focusing on growth.
